CHARITY AND VOLUNTEERING

Apart from holding a variety of dance classes and organising amazing annual dance shows, KCL Dance Society also contributes in charity events and collaborates with charity organisations. Being able to give back to the society and help people by doing what we love most, dance! Every year our society organises a Christmas Charity Show aimed to both get us in the spirit of the holidays, and to help those who most need it on those holy days. In addition, we hold several dance workshops which give individuals the opportunity to learn some dance moves, regardless whether they had any previous experience in dancing. If you love dancing, then you should purchase our “I Love Dance” T-shirts, available for just £8 and you, too, could help our charity help others in need; plus they look cool! Keep posted on this page for more information and updates on our workshops and shows and do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly with any queries you may have.
Dance on. Help on.

Summary

KCL Dance Society prides itself on giving back to the local community by doing what we love to do – DANCE!! And this year has been no exception! Some of the many things we did in 2015/16 include:

  • Run a Charity Dance Workshop in collaboration with RAG.
  • Participate in the Great RAG Run, raising a massive £582.12 – more than any other society!!
  • Put on our annual sell-out Christmas Show ‘Waltzing in a Winter Wonderland’ in Tutus, which managed to raise £533.39 for the Manna Society (a homeless day shelter based in London Bridge, providing free breakfasts, lunches, hot showers and housing + welfare advice to those who need it).
  • Ran workshops in jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre and swing for primary school children as part of SHINE Mentoring’s annual celebration events.
  • And of course, put on our fantastic end of year show ‘London Calling’ in Greenwood in March. We raised a humongous £7617, which we donated toICANDANCE – a charity offering dance and performance opportunities to children and young people with varying disabilities. They run disability awareness days, workshops + training, weekly dance classes, and an annual performance, all catered to the needs of the individual dancer.
      • Southwark Children’s Brass Band – a charity which provides weekly group based music training in brass instruments for children, encouraging them to enjoy the challenges of making music by learning and playing on their own and as a group.
      • Parkinson’s Can Dance – a programme which puts on weekly dance classes for people with Parkinson’s, allowing them to explore and enjoy dance and live music in a supportive and creative environment.

It’s been an amazing year, so congratulations Dance Soc – we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you!
