Hope you are all having a lovely summer so far! This is a message from your new committee to give you a few updates and to tell you how excited we are for this upcoming year…

For those newcomers starting in September, we will be at freshers fair with all the info about the club, classes and our amazing show in March! There will also be a taster day during freshers welcome period which will be a whole day of dancing with a variety of styles. From burlesque to bollywood I’m sure there will be a style for you! It also gives everyone a chance to come and meet the new committee and socialise with loads of new people!

Classes will resume when term begins at the end of September and we will put up a new timetable soon. We also plan to have A LOT of socials next year where we can let off some steam and (courtesy of Gaga) just DANCE. I hope your all getting reaaally excited (because we all are!) and are looking forward to seeing you next year!

For those of you who have flooded our inboxes over the past few days, you’ll be happy to know that DVDs, Show T-shirts AND Show programmes will be on sale at the event! You can also pick up Dance Soc kit if you have not done so already!

IMPORTANT- **New Committee 2010-2011**

Alas, it is time for this year’s committee to pass on the Dance Soc baton to an exciting new one! The handover ceremony will take place at during our reunion, where the new committee will be elected by Dance Soc members.

**ROLE DESCRIPTIONS**

PRESIDENT

Head of the society and leader of the group.

Roles include:

- Giving the members what they want and modifying the society accordingly.

- Main person in contact with KCLSU, Greenwood Theatre and heads of other societies to organize room bookings, show bookings and keep others up to date on what is happening with the society.

- Contacting other societies to organize events such as  the Diwali show, RAG and other union events.

- In charge of weekly Dance classes and professional teachers.

Show time:

This is probably the most gruelling task! The President should be able to organize choreographers, backstage crew, ushers, music and meetings with Greenwood Theatre Stage managers, KCLSU etc etc. The whole committee will need to work together as a team and you will be responsible for making sure that happens!!!! Things will go wrong and you will have to adapt at the last minute….

But don’t let this put you off. Although it can be very demanding (esp. at show time), it is a truly rewarding experience and I encourage you to go for it !

VICE-PRESIDENT:

- President’s right hand man (or woman)!

As VP you are in effect a double act with the President; you work very closely to get all sorts of different jobs done. Your main roles include being chief organizer of choreographers during show time, booking of professional teachers and organization of cast during show week. You are expected to step in if the President is not available and will take a fair amount of the workload when it comes to dance show.

TREASURER

- Money, money, money!

The Treasurer is key to a successful society. Your main roles include keeping an accurate and up to date record of all finances (both in and outgoings). They deal with paying teachers each week, socials, for the greenwood, budgeting for costumes and props etc etc. They will also be key in liaising with KCLSU about the society’s finances and overall budget.

SECRETARY

- Organisation + timekeeping.

This is mainly administrative; taking minutes at meetings, processing all the membership information and updating the members list and sending weekly emails. When it’s showtime, they ensure everybody is a member for insurance purposes!

SOCIAL SECRETARY:

- Party hard!

The person who holds this role organises all social events, the main ones being the Christmas and After Show party. On top of that they should organise Theatre and Dinner trips and weekly events such as trips to the walkabout and free food in guys bar and any dressing up/promotion events we do, and promote them in conjunction with the publicity officer!!!

PUBLICITY OFFICER

- Leaflets/Website/Posters…

This person designs and prints off the Fresher fair posters and leaflets, weekly timetables, show posters and flyers and is responsible for putting them up at all three campuses. In conjunction with the general officer helps design the show programmes and t-shirts. Also, keeps Dance Soc website updated on a regular basis and liaises with KCLSU to ensure sufficient marketing of the society.

SALSA OFFICERS:

- Organising and Supervising two hours of weekly lessons by professional salsa teachers. We employ Tropicana Salsa who we have used for the last few years. You would also be the point of contact for payment for the teachers, (in liasion with the Treasurer) as well as any upcoming events/changes/shedules within dance soc.

- take the role of promoting Tropicana’s salsa club nights and lessons outside of King’s, where students get lessons half price.

This year and in the past we:

- offered beginners, improvers, intermediate and advanced classes over the two hours

- Took the beginners class and improvers class each week

- Led warm ups

- Choreographed a salsa piece for the show

- Organised two amazing SALSALICIOUS socials at Cubana, Waterloo

- As part of committee, helped out with numerous tasks such as: supervising classes, checking and responding to emails, updating the website organising everything to do with the show…etc!

As Salsa Officer it is your ticket to get FULLY involved with dance soc, you are not strictly restricted to salsa and can use your strengths, contacts and expertise to help out with ANYTHING to do with dance soc!

NO salsa experience is required, but it would make more sense if you are passionate about salsa. You will enjoy this role, and is a great way to “enter the salsa world” via the teachers of Tropicana.

LATIN & BALLROOM OFFICER:

The role involves arranging for a ballroom and Latin teacher to teach a beginners and improvers class on a weekly basis, setting up the room and collecting money. Also, helping to organise a ballroom and latin routine for the dance show!!

BALLET & CONTEMPORARY OFFICER:

This is the person who will deal with organising the ballet and contemporary classes. This includes contacting the teachers, and being present at the classes. They will also be responsible to liaise with the professional ballet choreographers for the show.

GENERAL OFFICER

This involves doing the odd jobs that don’t really fit into a category, and helping distribute the workload a bit more (which for dance soc is pretty big!). This can include kit, organising trips, updating the website every week with the timetables, and making the programs for the show. Other jobs are designing and ordering the hoodies, helping put up the posters, and helping with costumes and props, everything to do with the show!

COMPETITIONS OFFICER

This involves:

- Being the main line of contact with universities nationwide and liaising with groups hosting dance competition events

- General organisation of the event such as official paperwork, transport + travel, overnight stays and competitions’ kit (when necessary).

- Judging at the first set of auditions for FUSION alongside President of Dance Soc and co-ordinator of the Fusion Comps group.

For this role, we are ideally looking for someone who will be an active member of Fusion, taking part in competitions as well.

Please simply send an email to agm@kcldancesoc.co.uk with your FULL NAME, YEAR OF STUDY and the POSITION (S) you would like to run for.

Please note,

1. You cannot run FOR MORE THAN 2 POSITIONS! You will be given the opportunity to give a 2 minute speech for each of the positions you are running for.

2. ALL candidates MUST be King’s students in the next academic year (i.e. Sept 2010 to June 2011).

3. ALL candidates MUST be members of Dance Soc by the election date. If you apply and are not a member, you will be removed from the election list.

4. Deadline for applying: WEDNESDAY 28TH APRIL! So you have plenty of time to decide

Write a little speech NO LONGER THAN TWO MINUTES which you will present at the reunion. Don’t fret, it will be a very laid back and informal event! But make sure you state why you should be the role you’re going for, etc!

With your wonderful company and all the wonderful events taking place this will be a truly enjoyable evening – guaranteed giggles, fun and puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure ENTERTAINMENT!

Just a quick note to let you all know that FUSION along with other dance soc members went to Royal Holloway University of London’s Dance Competition on the 27th March 2010 (yes…the day after the immense aftershow party at Cable!)

To get Straight to the point, we came away with:

Winners - Jazz

Runners up  - Ballet

3rd place - Contemporary

3rd place - Tap

A special mention must go to Lara Holford - who won Best Dancer of the whole entire competition!!
